What is the Regional Autism Intervention Program?
The Regional Autism Intervention Program provides services to children with autism and their families across Northern Ontario. Child Care Resources (CCR) is the lead agency for this program throughout the entire North Region, which includes Sudbury, Algoma, Thunder Bay and Kenora / Rainy River. In Sudbury and Kenora / Rainy River, CCR delivers the services directly. In the Thunder Bay and Algoma Districts, partner agencies provide the service.
Who can take part in the program?
Children diagnosed by a physician or psychologist as having autism or a disorder at the severe end of the PDD spectrum and whose individual needs can best be met by Intensive Behaviour Intervention are eligible for the program.
What does the program offer?
Intensive Behaviour Intervention (IBI) is a systematic treatment for autism based on scientific research. It teaches functional and relevant skills to help young children with autism learn and succeed. IBI begins as early as possible after diagnosis and requires 20 – 40 hours per week of therapy based on clinical recommendations. The treatment is individualized to reflect each child’s needs and strengths.
The program also provides family support and works with parents, community agencies and school boards to support the transition of children to school and other community services.
